Off We Grow mentors spend time with young people through shared outdoor experiences—getting outside, trying new things, sharing what they know, and building positive relationships along the way.
That might mean helping kids learn to fish at a local lake, walking a trail together, exploring a park, sharing an outdoor skill, joining an Off We Grow group adventure, or trying something completely new.
The connection matters more than the activity.
Mentoring with Off We Grow is group-based, not one-on-one. Mentors participate alongside other screened adults and young people during shared outdoor activities and adventures.
It's designed to fit into real life. We're not asking you to give up every weekend or make a long-term commitment to a single child.
We're looking for dependable, encouraging adults who are willing to show up, follow program safety guidelines, and spend meaningful time with young people through Off We Grow activities.
There isn't just one way to mentor.
Maybe you're someone who wants to participate regularly and build relationships with young people over time. Maybe you love fishing and would be happy to help kids learn a few Saturdays a year. Maybe hiking, camping, kayaking, wildlife, conservation, or another outdoor activity is your thing and you'd love the chance to share it.
Whatever you bring to the outdoors, there may be a young person who's never had the opportunity to experience it.
You don't need to be an outdoor expert.
You don't need expensive gear.
You don't need to constantly pay for activities.
You don't need a background in social work or education.
You don't need to commit every weekend.
You just need a willingness to show up, encourage young people, and share in the experience.
All mentors complete an application, screening process, references, required background checks, and orientation before participating in activities with young people.
Mentors receive clear expectations and guidance around youth safety, appropriate boundaries, communication, and participation in Off We Grow activities.
Young people are never paired individually with a mentor. Off We Grow activities are designed around shared experiences with multiple screened adults and participating youth.
We want our mentors to feel supported, too. Whether you're joining regularly or sharing a particular outdoor interest or skill, Off We Grow will help you understand your role and what to expect before you participate.
Sometimes making a difference starts with something as simple as:
“Let's go.”
